ERIC SCHROEDER'S big year 2019

WELCOME TO MY big year PAGE! For those of you who received my email, you’ll know what I’m up to here. For those of you who may have wandered here on your own, the gist of the story is that midway through 2018 I realized I was scheduling a lot of bird watching trips for 2019, and it occurred to me I ought to do a big year. (A big year, if you don’t know, is a year spent seeing how many bird species you can spot during that time.) In this case, my big year is going global; in 2019 I plan to go birding not only in the U.S., but also in Mexico, Southern Africa, and Madagascar. (And who knows where else I might end up?) But for those of you who may have read The Big Year or seen the film based on the book, mine is more of a big year without the capital letters—I won’t be chartering any airplanes to track a particular species.

Why this web page? Two reasons. First, I’ll use it to post a monthly update about my birding and the list of birds for that month. Also, as many of you know, inspired by having completed the Master Birder Program jointly sponsored by Golden Gate Audubon Society (GGAS) and the California Academy of Science, I’ve become a better birder and a GGAS volunteer (I’m currently serving on the Board of Directors as the organization’s secretary, and I’m chairing the Birdathon Committee and helping to run the GGAS Travel Program.) Several of my trips this year are with the GGAS travel program, and you might learn that you’d enjoy these trips, too.

My second reason for the web page is to increase awareness regarding the challenges birds are facing and to raise funds to support my favorite non-profit. Please take a minute to check out some of the other GGAS web pages, and I think you’ll agree with me that the work GGAS is doing in youth education, in adult education, and on conservation issues is truly superb.

If you’d like to make a donation, it will be going to an excellent cause. You can donate a fixed amount or pledge an amount per bird (but be warned—I’m hoping to see 1,000 different species this year!) If you’d like to receive a monthly update from me on the birds that I’ve been seeing, just click the E-MAIL ME button below and I’ll add you to my email list.

Happy birding!
